The Role of the Maths Champion (MC) and Deputy Maths Champion (DMC)
As part of the programme you should nominate two members of staff who are trained to a minimum Level 3 qualification to be the ‘Maths Champion’ and ‘Deputy Maths Champion’. You are best placed to choose who carries out each of these roles. Below is an outline of the main responsibilities of each role.
Maths Champion (MC) – The Maths Champion will be pivotal in leading the programme in your setting. With support from us at NDNA, the programme will firstly help the Maths Champion to develop and consolidate their own knowledge through the online training in Step 3 of the programme in order for them to then support, inspire and motivate other staff.
Maths Champions main responsibilities will include;
- Completing the online training in Step 3 of the programme
- Leading on the completion of audits of maths teaching and learning in the setting
- Observing and tracking children’s progress
- Creating action plans for improving maths provision across the setting
- Leading on the completion of the core activities
- Working closely with other staff to lead and drive improvement in supporting early maths.
Deputy Maths Champion (DMC) – The Deputy Maths Champion will be pivotal in working in partnership with and supporting the Maths Champion to implement change. Deputy Maths Champions will also have access to the online training in Step 3 of the programme which will enable the Maths Champion and Deputy Maths Champion to work together as a partnership to support and drive improvement.
It is vital that someone is leading the programme at all times to ensure successful completion of all elements. With this in mind the Deputy Maths Champion may replace the Maths Champion if they were to leave or be absent from the setting, enabling you to complete the full programme amidst any changes.
